In this time when Big Food and Pharma are making mega profits, I'm acknowledging a broken system with options a parent can count on. While the information super highway puts infinite resources at our fingertips, navigating that maze leaves my head spinning. I created Spilled Ingredients as a sieve for all of us busy, real folks and parents.© 2011 Spilled Ingredients – Natural Food and Cleaning

what on earth does “flavoring” mean when listed as an ingredient in foods like soups ? can msg be lumped under that label ? also when “spices” is listed can that mean msg ? I am really sensitive to msg in all it’s forms-I am a vegan and eat very few processed foods but when traveling in my rv I have some things on hand for times when fresh isn’t available or I’m feeling a little lazy !
@ Sara, great and frustrating questions… a good resource I’ve used is http://www.rense.com/general35/hidd.htm to see the various disguises for MSG. Generally, I have a no soup/broth/bouillon policy, because most of it does contain MSG in disguise. I do homemade only. Unfortunately, “flavoring” and “spices” can always mean MSG, so if you are looking to avoid it, I’d find alternatives for foods labeled as such. Traveling is really tricky, I agree. When I travel, I stock up on as many KIND or granola type bars as I can get my hands on, as well as a bunch of “nutty” or easy packaged snacks, fruits that last like clementines and apples, and just do my best to get myself to a good grocery store or trustworthy restaurant when possible. Sometimes it’s impossible to do homemade, give yourself breaks and good luck!
